COMFORT FROM A PSALM
When the storms come and it seems like darkness is all around through the wee hours of the night; just to hear the barreling sound of gale force winds ignites imagery of nature’s raw power to tear up everything and even take our lives in the process; but then alas the winds calm the rains cease and the sun gently beacons over the horizon in splendid fashion with an array of brightness that immediately lifts the spirits and calms an anxious heart.
From a spiritual perspective we identify with the imagery of storms and darkness and equate them to the attributes of our spiritual enemies. This is why the psalms speak profoundly to our spirits and connect us to a loving God. David was a man after God’s heart and yearned to be in his presence.
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalms 27:1 KJV)
One must be in the presence of Jehovah to have the assurance of faith in God. The statements of my light and salvation; my strength and my life; what should I fear or be afraid? These are statements of a person who dwells in the secret place of the Most High under the shadow of the Almighty. It is the place of solace, the consolation of the Spirit living, breathing, and having his being in us.
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. (Psalms 27:5 KJV)
It is a place of implicit trust in time of trouble he hides us in himself likened to the strength of a pavilion but so intimate like Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle, it is from that place of light, love, and faith he establishes us upon the rock of salvation. Brethren; when we purpose to seek his face, when we purpose to seek his heart, then we will receive what is in his hand.
(7) Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
(8) When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek. Psalms 27:7-8 KJV
In his presence we will cultivate confidence which results in a condition of clear distinction knowing that God hears the prayers of his children who choose to trust in him. Just like David when he was in exile; we can trust that God will give us refuge and comfort. It is the same with us; in times of privation when we are deprived of privileges, in times of desertion of friends when we are derailed by our enemies; in times of denouncement when we are slandered by others. We have a place of mercy where compassion flows like a fountain of refreshing waters.
(13) I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
(14) Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD. Psalms 27:13-14 KJV
I love the attitude the state exults; I would have fainted is added by the translators to complete the thought; but is true to the context. How many times can one say; I would have given up; but I believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. In other words, I have faith in God’s ability to turn this thing around. I have comfort in the thought that God is going to be with me through this trial, and that I can confide in him with all my heart; I may despair because of my enemies for will not fear them; for the Lord my God is with me.
Brethren, the Psalm ends on a high note; instructing us to wait with patience, and to be filled with courage, because he states he will strengthen our hearts as we wait upon the Lord. Brethren, lean not to your own reason; but trust the Lord with all your heart, mind, and strength; then you heart shall have peace, peace, wonderful coming down from the Father above. A peace which passes all your comprehension shall abide in you as you abide in Him. Brethren I would not have you ignorant. Selah
